Congratulations to everyone who was victorious, and deep appreciation for everyone who ran. Anyone who has ever run knows the toll it takes on your life. And this primary season, we had wonderful candidates from which to choose. I am grateful to everyone who brought competition to Democratic contests. A few thoughts: 1) We reinvigorate public interest and activism when there are multiple candidates from which to choose. I hope we don't revert back to the idea that incumbents should not be challenged. I feel like Colorado Democratic politics has been on autopilot for too long. It's how we ended up with a trio of wealthy white men dominating the process. Bennet dumped $1 million of his own money in to try to fend off Weiser. I am thrilled it didn't work. 2) The media contributed to why we still have Hickenlooper. Julie Gonzales and her team and the organizations that endorsed and supported her did an outstanding job. Kyle Clark is making the rounds on podcasts, and he said re: the Senate race that Julie lost because she was unknown. I wonder why?! There was a fraction of the coverage of that race as compared to the governor's race. And this points to the problem of the media (including Clark) deciding WHO should be covered based on THEIR idea of viability, not the voters. Why didn't the media push for debates between them, especially when compared to the number of gubernatorial debates? And hold Hickenlooper accountable for being a no-show? 3) Political Ads - some were pretty frustrating. Bennet claimed leadership on stopping the sale of public lands, but my recollection is that the Republicans abandoned it themselves. Similarly, I was tracking ICE issues pretty closely, and I don't recall him putting a stake in the ground on that. Hickenlooper either. Certainly not abolition. I saw one accusing Kenny Nguyen of being a bully and then used an out of context quote to support it. Misleading ads create cynicism and cynicism is why too few people vote. 4) Melat's victory is exciting! She is exceptionally talented. I participated in a Denver DSA candidate forum, and she wowed me. But whether it reflects a general trend toward support for democratic socialist policies in Colorado, I think is unclear. I was happy to see two awesome candidates, Wanda and Melat, challenging DeGette. 5) Lastly, a thank you to all of the party officers, party volunteers, and fellow candidates for your kindness to me during my run. I had the opportunity to cross paths with a number of the statewide candidates on a regular basis and I was so impressed with the depth of talent and commitment in that pool of people. Quite a few of these candidates (myself included) tried to be as many places as possible, and I could tell it meant a lot, especially to the communities outside of the metro area. Congratulations, Amanda Gonzales! She was a road warrior, for sure. We both found ourselves in September on a dicey drive home from Grand County. :) All in all, I think our party is in pretty good shape. less
